What does "momme" mean in silk?
The momme (mm) is the unit of measurement used to indicate the weight and density of silk. It allows you to assess the thickness, strength, and quality of a silk fabric. The higher the momme number, the denser, thicker, and more durable the silk. Converting momme to g/m² 1 momme ≈ 4.31 g/m² 16 momme ≈ 69 g/m² 19 momme ≈ 82 g/m² 22 momme ≈ 95 g/m² g/m²
Why is momme important?
The price of silk depends largely on its momme. 19 momme silk is denser, stronger, and more durable than 16 momme silk. It also offers a more luxurious feel and better durability.
Suggested Uses:
- Under 12 momme: scarves and very lightweight clothing
- 12 to 16 momme: silk scarves and clothing
- 19 momme: silk bed linen and
silk nightwear
- 22 momme and above: premium silk bed linen, more durable and easier to care for
At Silkmood, we exclusively use 19 momme and 22 momme silk for our silk bed linen and silk sleepwear.
This guarantees a perfect balance of softness, strength, durability, and elegance.
